We woke up this morning and looked out the window. It was a clear and sunny day, everything covered in white from last week’s snow. Perfect for a long walk.
There is a cemetery just south of Stockholm City called Skogskyrkogården, a Unesco World Heritage Site that we had talked about going to and this Sunday morning was the perfect day for such a visit. It sounds a bit funny to visit a cemetery for a walk. And even more so that a cemetery is a World Heritage Site, but when we got there I was stunned.
Right after getting off the train you could tell there was something special about this place. The entrance looked more like a walkway into an old Roman fort than a cemetery in modern day Sweden. I could picture in my mind Caesar’s legions marching home to Rome on that road.
Skogskyrkogården is what its name says, a cemetery in the woods. Rows upon rows of headstones among the tall pine trees. Covering a huge area, with hidden chapels and churches among the trees, it is truly something extraordinary.
The air, cold and brisk. The sun shining brightly on the snow covering this beautiful place. It was like walking into an old fairy tale.
